Citizens Medical Center Receives Trauma Center Award.

Citizens Medical Center’s Lead Level III designated Trauma Center received the Trauma Center of the Year Award at the Texas EMS Conference Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, November 13, 2012. This annual award honors the designated trauma facility in Texas that has demonstrated leadership and high standards in implementing injury prevention programs and providing trauma patient care to the citizens and visitors of Texas.

“When the ambulance sirens are wailing in the middle of the night, the Victoria community should be comforted to know that our trauma program has received this State recognition for excellence.” said
Dr. Steve Hougen, the hospital’s Trauma Medical Director. “Receiving this award is an honor for the entire trauma team, including EMS providers, emergency room personnel, nurses, intensive care physicians, and trauma surgeons.”

Dr. Hougen has worked alongside Carolyn Knox, RN, Trauma Coordinator since the inception of the trauma program in 2003. Citizens Medical Center initially received Lead Level III Trauma Center designation in 2004. Since then, Dr. Hougen and Mrs. Knox have crafted a program where our performance improvement scores were recognized by Jane Guerrero, Director of Trauma and EMS Systems for the Department of State Health Services (DSHS), as “phenomenal”. Citizens Medical Center received no deficiencies as well as 99% loop closure at their last survey, which occurred in October, 2012.

“Congratulations to the Medical Staff for their commendable participation and support of the trauma program,” said David P. Brown, Administrator of Citizens Medical Center. “The Crossroads area is lucky to have these dedicated professionals serving them.” The Trauma Center of the Year award was presented to Carolyn Knox by Dr. David Lakey, DSHS Commissioner of Health, and Kathy Perkins, RN, MBA, who is in charge of the DSHS division of regulatory services. In accepting the award on behalf of the hospital,
Mrs. Knox acknowledged the dedication of the Medical Staff, hospital staff, and the support of hospital leadership in achieving this recognition.
