Because the first three hours after the onset of stroke symptoms are so critical, stroke patients require immediate evaluation and advanced critical expertise. Time-sensitive treatments can save brain function and reduce the risk of disability, but the advanced diagnostic capabilities required for top-level stroke treatment are often difficult to implement in community hospitals. Telemedicine, which vastly broadens the reach of neurological specialists, has been a crucial innovation in stroke treatment. In many studies, it has been shown to decrease the risk of stroke death in a community setting.
Part of the 12-hospital Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, MNI is home to one of the world’s first dedicated stroke programs, leading the nation in number of acute stroke patients treated with the clot-dissolving drug tPA. Patients also benefit from MNI’s state-of-the-art brain imaging capabilities, world-class neurological expertise and Memorial Hermann’s Texas Trauma Institute, which is one of only two Level 1 Trauma Centers in the Houston area.
By collaborating with MNI and the UTHealth Medical School in the new Telemedicine Program, Citizens Medical Center gains the ability to deliver expert stroke care when and where it is needed most. We look forward to providing our patients with access to world-class care within our community — leading to improved outcomes and a new standard of neurological care.
