Stroke is a serious medical condition that needs immediate medical attention. It is now the third leading cause of death in individuals and the number one cause of disability. During a stroke, the brain loses oxygen so that every minute lost before treatment equals brain tissue lost. Could you identify a person having a stroke? Recognizing the symptoms and seeking immediate medical attention can lessen the effects of stroke if treatment is provided within three hours of the first symptom.

The National Stroke Association uses the F.A.S.T. test to identify stroke symptoms.

F.A.S.T. stands for:

  • F = FACE Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face drop?
  • A = ARM Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
  • S = SPEECH Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Does their speech sound slurred or strange?
  • T = TIME React quickly. If you observe any of these signs, it’s time to call 911 to get to the nearest hospital.
