October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Support breast cancer survivors and enhance breast cancer awareness by participating in the 8th Annual Walk for Hope.

On Saturday, October 13, 2012, join breast cancer survivors on a one, two, or three mile walk — your choice — on the outdoor track at the Citizens HealthPlex. Opening ceremonies and check-in for the walk start at 8:30 a.m., and the walk begins at 9:30 a.m. Survivors will lead the way with a victory lap, then attendees will follow. The walk entry fee is $5 with the first 150 paid walk registrants receiving a commemorative t-shirt. Call (361)572-5064 by Wednesday, October 10, 2012 to register or for more information on this event. Proceeds from the Walk will fund free mammograms.

Pathologist C. Leilani Valdes, M. D. will provide an educational program on breast cancer and will be discussing risk factors, symptoms, and prevention through screening. Door prizes, refreshments, and t-shirts will be provided for walkers and supporters.

Breast Cancer Bunco, a night for “the girls”, will be held on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at the Citizens HealthPlex from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The games start at 6:30 p.m., and tickets are $25 per person. Proceeds will fund free mammograms for women in the community.

Refreshments will be served, and prizes will be awarded for the most wins, losses, buncos, and aces. The registration deadline is Wednesday, October 17, 2012, and participants must be 21 years of age or older.
