Radiology

Early diagnosis of disease is one of the best ways to extend a productive and energetic life. That’s why Citizens Medical Center invested heavily in its radiologic equipment & highly skilled staff. Radiology is the branch of medicine that performs examinations for the diagnosis and treatment of disease, think of them as an early warning system for your health.

Advances in technology now provide the ability to detect disease processes at an early stage, making treatment more successful. If your physician has ordered a particular test, please review our information below. It will provide helpful explanations of CT scans, Mammography, and Bone Densitometry. Reliable CT scans are a critical diagnostic tool. Computer Tomography (CT) imaging, also known as “CAT scanning” (Computer Axial Tomography), has the unique ability to image a combination of soft tissue, bone, and blood vessels.

Citizens Medical Center saves our community hundreds of trips and thousands of miles to out-of-town facilities with this advanced x-ray technology at our fingertips. Not simply convenient, CT scans are also an immediate diagnosis life-line for surgeons and ER trauma physicians who need critical information on the spot! CT scans combine the use of a digital computer together with a rotating x-ray device to create detailed cross sectional images or “slices” of the different organs and body parts such as the lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, pelvis, extremities, brain, spine, and blood vessels. CT is the workhorse imaging system in our busy Radiology Department where skilled and registered radiographers see to your comfort as well as your health.

At a time when many hospitals are dropping Mammography from their services, because it is heavily regulated, Citizens Medical Center purchased digital equipment. And how important this screening tool is! Mammography is an x-ray of the breast used to screen for or investigate breast abnormalities and breast cancer, particularly those which are too small to be felt by physical examination. A mammogram can show a developing breast tumor before it is large enough to be felt by a woman or even by a highly skilled health care professional.

Screening mammography is used for early detection of breast cancer in women without any breast symptoms. Diagnostic mammography is used to help characterize suspicious breast masses or determine the cause of other breast symptoms.

Citizens RadiologyAccording to the American Cancer Society (ACS), women aged 40 or older should have a screening mammogram every year. And if you’re concerned, says the ACS, about radiation, consider that one mammogram exposes a woman to roughly the same amount of radiation as flying from New York to California on a commercial jet — and that can’t save your life!

Designed for comfort and confidentiality, Citizens Medical Center’s mammography suite and four registered radiographers provide over 1,000 screening exams each year including those offered at our annual Health Fair and at a reduced cost to under-insured women during Breast Cancer Awareness month in October. Citizens Medical Center’s mammography facility is certified by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Food and Drug Administration. We follow the strictest guidelines to ensure that our equipment is safe and uses the lowest dose of radiation possible.

Citizens Medical Center’s Bone Densitometry equipment is a noninvasive technology that is used to measure bone mass — and the perfect testing device for detecting the early signs of osteoporosis. It is a fast and painless way to keep watch on bone density, which also affects skeletal fragility and potential fractures. Bone mass, simply put, is the weight of the skeleton, overall or in specific regions. The amount of bone you have in your skeleton determines how strong it is and how much trauma or force it can withstand before it fractures.
